We also review 3 Precor elliptical alternatives.

The Precor EFX 5.33 adaptive motion trainer is a very sturdy light commercial elliptical that provides you with a smooth, natural ,low impact workout. Unique features to Precor include automatic CrossRamp angles, which allows you to change the path that your foot travels. This means that you can focus on a specific target muscle group or all of the muscles of your lower body at once.

The biomechanics provides you with low impact EFX technology, giving the lowest perceived rate of exertion of any elliptical brand. You get 20 levels of variable resistance along, 10 of which are preset. The stride length is variable between 21 and 23 inches, to give a very good range of motion. You also get a lifetime frame warranty.

The Precor EFX 576i is a commercial quality elliptical which provides you with the advanced features that you normally don’t get in a home trainer. CrossRamp uses variable stride geometry to give you a better striding experience. Ramp angles are between 13 and 40 degrees. 14 preset programs include a fitness test and one manual program. The max user weight is 350 pounds, attesting to the sturdiness of the frame.

The Precor EFX576i has arms that are moveable through a full range of motion, allowing you to get an effective upper body workout. The stride length on this unit ranges all the way to 24.7 inches, at ramp angles between 15 and 40 degrees. There are 20 levels of variable resistance on this unit.

The Precor EFX546i is a commercial quality elliptical with fixed arms to add solidity to the unit. The ramp cover of this machine lifts off to allow easy cleaning access. You get an amazingly smooth feel on this strider, thanks in large part to the double polyurethane wheels, with oversized axle and sealed bearings. Stride length is from 21.2 to 24.7 inches, giving you a great range of motion.

Hand held heart rate monitoring on the EFX546i gives an accurate pulse reading. There are 20 levels of resistance, including 10 preset programs and 3 cross training workouts. Max user weight is 350 pounds, and you get a 7 year frame warranty, with 2 year for parts and 1 year on labor.

Precor provide outstanding quality and functionality on their EFX range of elliptical trainers. They are, however, an expensive option for the home fitness enthusiast. Fortunately, there are other options that offer similar features to the commercial standard that you get with Precor, but at a reduced price. The Sole Fitness E35 delivers 20 ramp angle adjustments, chest strap heart rate monitor and oversized foot pedals.

The Octane Fitness QX35 gives you a very compact size, low pivot point and 3 workout boosters , while the Diamondback Fitness 1260EF brings you 20 resistance levels, 10 elliptic angle adjustments and a max user weight of 325 pounds.

The Sole Fitness E34 Elliptical provides you with a fluid, natural motion thanks to the whisper quiet drive motion. There are 10 workout programs on this machine, which is half the amount on most Precor ellipticals.

The Sole Fitness E34 combines both hand-held and chest strap heart rate monitoring. This provides you with a more accurate pulse monitor than on any of the Precor models. The foot pedals on the Sole E34 are oversized, but not adjustable like the EFX Precor range. You will, however, save hundreds of dollars by going with this option.

The Octane Fitness Q35X is easy to mount and dismount with a small step up height. It’s compact size makes it a great fit for even the most challenging environment, in contrast to the Precor range. The natural, smooth motion on the Octane elliptical, thanks in part to a low pivot point on the handlebars. The double set of handles allow you to fully engage both the upper and lower body.

The handlebars on the Octane Fitness Q35X move in a wide range of motion for increased calorie burn. The Q35 features a large LED screen that displays all of your workout stats. All surfaces are sweat resistant and easy to clean. The stride length on this machine is 19 inches, which is a few inches shorter than the Precor range.

There are 10 ellipse angle electronic adjustments on this trainer. Our favorite is the Precor EFX 5.33, with its crosss ramp angles, EFX technology and 23 inch stride length. We also loved the Precor EFX 576i, featuring variable stride geometry, enhanced stride length and impressive 350 pound user weight. The third best Precor home elliptical is the Precor EFX546i, with its long stride length, 20 resistance levels and 7 year frame warranty.

Precor alternatives offer similar functionality at a lower price point. The Sole Fitness E34 Elliptical provides 20 ramp angle adjustments, a chest strap heart rate monitor but a slightly smaller stride range than you get with the Precor EFX range. The Octane Fitness Q35X come in a compact frame size, is ergonomically designed for maximum performance and comes with three signature workout boosters.

Finally, the Diamondback Fitness 1260EF delivers 20 resistance levels, 10 electronic angle adjustments and max user weight of 350 pounds.

Precor EFX 5.33

My name is Jim Roose.
