There are a number of different ways to power an exercise bike, ranging from a flywheel to magnetic resistance and even water resistance. The simplest of them all is air resistance.

An air bike makes use of fan resistance. The fan part of those fan bikes is connected to the pedals by way of a belt and pulley system. When you pedal the fan turns and you are having to work against the air resistance bike. As an added bonus you also get the benefit of cooling air to make your workout more comfortable.

The air bike is a lot easier on your joints than any other type of resistance. And because there are fewer working parts, it is less likely to malfunction. There are pads that will eventually need replacing and no flywheel to worry about.

Here’s what to look for in an air bike:

The seat should provide you with the means of custom adjustment. You should be able to move it both fore and aft. It should also provide you with a decent level of comfort through its padding.

Look for a bike that has a solid stable, steel frame. The fewer separate parts are the better. Look for a bike that has a max user weight in excess of 300 pounds. The bike should have a stable, wide base that prevents it from sliding around when you are going all out with high intensity.

Many bikes will market the multi training programs that are built into their monitors. However, most people hardly use such programs, so don’t make a number of programs a deciding factor. An upright that provides 5-10 programs is plenty. However, your monitor should provide the following training diagnostics: Speed, RPM, workout time, pulse rate and distance.
