Editor’s Conclusion
Lifting weights even a few days a week can be murder on your hands, and Doc Spartan Combat Ready Ointment helps to keep your hands in tip-top shape. Calluses are great and help you gain a firmer grip on the bar, but few lifters take the proper care of their callouses.

Once, I ripped off one of my calluses during a deadlift, and suddenly the simple act of grabbing the bar sent shockwaves of pain up through my arm. I didn’t realize it at the time, but a little preventative care could have spared me the pain of lifting with a raw and bloody paw.

What I love most about this ointment set is that it can help quickly heal a broken callus, fights off bacteria from entering the wound, and can even be used to prevent calluses from breaking in the first place!

It’s composed of all-natural ingredients that you can feel good about, and include a hard steel case that is a cinch to toss into your gym bag.

You take care of your muscles at the end of a workout, and it’s about time you take care of your hard-working hands as well!

Key Features

INGREDIENTS

There are no weird or unpronounceable ingredients found in any of the products offered by Doc Spartan. Both the chapstick and HWD (Handheld Wound Device) are made from the same all-natural ingredients.

The main ingredients in this formula are beeswax, Vitamin E, and Eucalyptus essential oils. Other ingredients include organic coconut oil, almond oil, lavender essential oil, and tea tree essential oil.

Vitamin E is one of the most important ingredients in this formula to help your skin heal from damage. Primarily, Vitamin E is found in products that help heal sun damage and reduce inflammation in your skin.

By applying Vitamin E topically, it helps to speed up the healing process in your hands, as well as reduce inflammation. It can even help to soothe and comfort irritated skin as well.

The inclusion of beeswax also helps to provide a locked-in barrier from outside bacteria. While it fights off bacteria from entering your open wound, it also has added benefits of moisturizing and healing your skin as well.

Additional ingredients such as essential oils are great for preventative measures. By applying this ointment once a day, these oils help to keep your skin nice and moisturized. Eucalyptus is what gives this ointment a nice and soothing scent.

On top of a nice scent, Eucalyptus oil helps to reduce inflammation and speed up the recovery time.

USE

Whether you just want to care for your hard-working hands, or you need to expedite the recovery process from a busted callous, this ointment works double-duty.

For preventative care, I recommend using this ointment at least once a day. I like to apply a thin layer to my hands right after the shower. When your hands are soft from the shower, they absorb the ingredients in this ointment better than if your skin is completely dry.

Then, before hitting the gym I add on another layer to fight off bacteria and keep my hands nice and soft (but not too soft!).

If you apply this ointment daily, it’s unlikely that you will ever suffer from a broken callus. However, if you can’t quite get into the swing of a dedicated hand care routine, it also helps to heal wounds as well.

Whether it is a broken callus, a cut or scrape, or even recovering from surgery, this ointment will keep the skin around the wound clean and healthy as well as speed up your overall healing time.

SIZE

The ointment comes in a small .35 ounce application stick. To put that into perspective, a standard stick of deodorant weighs in at around 2.5 ounces. The size of this container is just slightly larger than a stick of travel deodorant. While this may seem to be quite small, the smart application process ensures that none is ever wasted.

WIth liquid moisturizers, you often waste a lot by pouring out too much. This smart stick allows you to do one quick swipe over your hands or wound to ensure that it is covered in just the right amount.

Overall, users found that this stick is small, but it lasts for quite some time before it needs to be replaced.

PORTABILITY

One thing that I love most about this set is that it comes in a nice steel hard case. It makes it a cinch to pop into your gym bag without getting lost in a sea of gym gear.

Many users also treat the hard case as a compact gym-ready first aid kit. It provides users with enough room for their ointment as well as additional room for bandages and tape.

The included chapstick (that is composed of the same ingredients as the HWD) is easy to clip onto the zipper of your gym bag or tote so that it doesn’t become lost. If there was a world record for losing chapstick, I would likely win the prize.

By building a clip into the cap of the chapstick it ensures that it will never become lost (as long as you never lose your gym bag!).

APPLICATION

Taking care of your callouses is something that a lot of lifters just don’t do. However, strong calluses are incredibly important, especially when lifting heavy weights!

After the shower, I like to use a fine pumice stone to shave off jagged edges as well as shave down their overall bulk. When calluses become too thick, they are more likely to tear. After I shave them down, I apply a thin layer of Doc Spartan Combat Ready Ointment to help moisturize and reduce irritation.

It’s important that you do this right out of the shower when your skin is more porous and ready to absorb nutrients and retain moisture.

While it’s a perfect preventative treatment, it’s also perfect for after-wound care. If you tore a callous and want to continue to lift safely and pain-free, it requires a few steps.

When I tore a callus, I left the wound open and applied my ointment a few times a day to ensure that it stayed moisturized.

When I was ready to lift, I applied a new layer of ointment and then wrapped my hand in a bandage and tape. That barbell is a breeding ground of bacteria, blood, sweat, and tears.

To avoid infection, it’s essential that you wrap your hand to avoid direct contact with the bar.

PRICE

The price of this set is a little bit more expensive than your standard moisturizers, but it is well worth the higher price point!

While many lifters may tell you that a simple moisturizer is all you need to care for your calluses, that's not necessarily true.

A cheap and affordable moisturizer may keep your skin moist, but it doesn’t contain the bacteria-fight properties or quick-healing ingredients found in Doc Spartan’s formula.

The ointment comes in a .35 ounce container that surprisingly lasts for quite some time. The deodorant-style application ensures that you only need as much as you need and allows you to apply a thin and even coat that is waste-free.

Sure, it may cost a little bit more, but if you really want to take care of your precious and well-earned calluses, this pack is worth every penny!

Verdict

For powerlifters or weight trainers, a strong grip is just as important as strong muscles. Sure, you may be strong enough to deadlift 400 pounds, but if your hands are weak you will not be able to hold the bar long enough to lift it off of the ground!

Strong calluses are the key to heavy lifts, and a torn callus could send you back to square one. You stretch and ice your muscles after the end of a workout session, and caring for your calluses is just as important.

Doc Spartan Combat Ready Ointment is essential for lifters that want the very best for their prized calluses. It is composed of all-natural ingredients that you can feel good about and helps to keep your hands nice and protected.

If you use it every day (along with trimming your calluses and using a pumice stone), you will never need to suffer physical and emotional distress when a callus rips free of your hand.

If you do manage to rip a callus, this ointment is a great tool to have on hand (pun intended) to soothe, protect, and speed up the recovery process.

It may cost a bit more than your average moisturizer, but it is well worth every penny to have in your gym bag arsenal at all times!
